To spread my textile knowledge, I share my know-how on Katazome, Natural Dyeing and Weaving in the form of small-scale workshops.
All workshops are given by me personally. During these workshops, I rely on over 30 years of experience as a professor at the AKI (Academy of fine Arts AKI/Artez).
Workshops are given on requests of groups, or at the invitation of textile institutes/organisations.
Please contact me via cwvanderheide@hetnet.nl for more information and quotes.

In 2024 a group of artists from Finland visited my atelier for a series of workshops focussing on katazome and indigo.
The starting point: What is a resist print? Simply said when you print with a paste that blocks the fabric when it is to be dyed, it creates a white pattern. There are a lot of different materials and methods to work with, depending where you live.
In this workshop we focused on printing with Japanese Katagami stencils and we explored 3 printing pastes.
1. Rice paste, Japanese recipe.
2. Soy and Lime paste.
3. Ready made Japanese resist paste.

In the summer of 2017, I visited visiting Clare Island (Ireland) to give a Katazome workshop. During this workshop we focussed on making stencil prints on silk with rice paste. The technique is based on the Japanese Katazome resist printing method. For the workshop I developed a simplified way of Katazome printing, making use of the natural dyes Clare Island's untamed nature has to offer.

During this workshop you will learn about vegetal dyes which we will thicken with various resources to make them suitable for printing.
We will make stencil prints on silk with rice paste. The technique is based on the Japanese Katazome resist printing method, the precursor of the silkscreen technique that we use nowadays for fabric printing. In this way you create graphic patterns

During your stay at Clare Island, you will be amazed and immensely inspired by the nature this tiny island has to offer.

The workshop will take place at Ballytoughey Loom. The Ballytoughey loom is a small cottage industry producing high quality natural fibre hand woven goods. During the year it offers courses in natural dyeing, spinning, and hand weaving.
